Edward Hopper
is not well known today, even though he wrote many poems
that made it into worship resources of his time.
Jesus Saviour Pilot Me may be his best known hymn
Indeed, some say it is his only surving hymn.
Several videos of this Jesus Saviour Pilot Me
Edward Hopper's poem brings comfort to many.
Edward Hopper pastored the Church of Sea and Land.
His writings are still valid in different cultures.
Edward Hopper
worked with
J. E. Gould
who composed the tune
Pilot
Jesus, Saviour, pilot me
Over life's tempestous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll,
Hiding rock and treacherous shoal,
Chart and compass came from Thee:
Jesus Saviour, pilot me.
As a mother stills her child,
Thou canst hush the ocean wild;
Boisterous waves obey Thy will
when Thou sayest to them 'Be still!'
Wondrous Sovereign of the sea,
Jesus, Saviour, pilot me.
When at last I near the shore,
And the fearful breakers roar
'Twixt me and the peaceful rest,
Then, while leaning on Thy breast,
May I hear Thee say to me,
'Fear not, I will pilot thee.'

Jesus Saviour Pilot Me
How is a hymn described?
A prayer for comfort, often called the Sailor's Hymn, this
poem asks Jesus to be present not only through the uncertainties
of life, but to continue to be present beyond life.
You can look at the hymn, Jesus, Saviour Pilot me, and
whatever situation you are in, it is still apropos to
you.

And you can talk about music, and this piece
is an example of music and lyrics fitting together
seamlessly.
Pilot, the tune composed by J. E. Gould
is a tune written in descending figures
and set to rhythms including dotted notes
and triplets.
This rhythm, gives a gently rocking feel
to the melody, and the descending phrases
give a feeling of arriving at a restful
place every cadence.
It is possible to accompany this tune with
the simplest of accompaniments, I, IV and V.
There are, hints of other things going on
though. When in B flat major, for instance
what looks and sounds a lot like a D Major
seventh is thrown in followed by what looks
and sounds a lot like a C minor chord in
the very first phrase. These chords aren't
very much at home in the key of B flat major.
The c minorish chord would be kind of normal
if it led to an F major or F seven chord,
but instead it runs through an E major to
cadence back to a strong B flat chord, the
home chord, Safe at last!
The accompanist, of course, may ignore these
decorative chords, but they
give a feeling of the insecurity of troubled
waters before a safe harbor.
Real life is more complicated than placid waters,
ant this tune describes real life.
